Stress is a silent killer, there’s no way around it. Too much stress can wear you down, affecting your physical and mental health to a dangerous point. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t just come from a workaholic boss or bills; in fact, your own home could be the source of your stress. We’ve put together a list of, ten ways you can easily reduce stress around your home, so that your little slice of real estate becomes a sanctuary, rather than the cause of your anxiety and tension.

  1. Plants

Indoor plants don’t just freshen the air and make your house a home, studies show that they can actually reduce stress, as well as increase productivity and concentration. Plus, they’re downright soothing, especially if you live in a small space or if you live alone.

  1. Gym

One of the best ways to reduce stress? Work it out through exercise. If getting to the gym isn’t a reality in your day to day or is adding to your stress, you can still make physical wellness a priority by easily creating a home gym that’s effective and that you’ll have no excuse not to use.

  1. Tech-Free Bedroom

Your bedroom should be an oasis for you to turn to after a long day. But cluttering it with technology like your phone (switch to an alarm clock, no excuses!), laptop, TV, and tablet will only make it just another place to do work or tasks. Ban technology from your bedroom, and it will quickly become your go-to relaxation zone.

  1. Herbal Teas

There’s a reason herbal teas have been around for centuries; they’re calming, soothing, and make you feel a heck of lot better when the going gets tough. Keep a variety on hand to turn to when you feel upset or anxious; it might even help knowing you have something comforting nearby.

  1. Healthy Food

It’s no surprise that having junk food around the house makes you feel tempted. But the constant effort and stress of battling that temptation is not great for your mental health, or your relaxation time. Spend your time doing the things you love instead of obsessing over the box of cookies in the pantry by clearing out all temptations and following an easy meal plan.

  1. Meal Prep

Speaking of healthy food, there’s nothing like having a long day at work only to face the daunting stress of having to cook a healthy meal from scratch. Putting in a few hours on a Sunday to prepare food for the week can ease the hassle of doing it every day.

  1. Your To-Do List

Who doesn’t have an endless to-do list that never seems to get any smaller? It might seem like a herculean effort, but reducing your to-do list (by cancelling tasks and learning to say no) instead of working even harder will reduce your stress and might you feel lighter.

  1. Organization

Clutter can be surprisingly stressful, even if you’re not a naturally neat person. Ridding your countertops, shelves and surfaces of unnecessary items and organizing other stressful spaces like the kitchen drawers or a linen closet can help you feel less anxious or stressed.

  1. Separate Space

Having your own physical space to clear your thoughts and relax is crucial in every home. It doesn’t have to be an entirely separate room to count, just somewhere you can sit back without any distractions and feel the stress leave you, be that a lounge chair in the back yard or a yoga mat in a quiet corner of your living room.

  1. Small Chores

A great rule of thumb is that if it takes less than two minutes, do it immediately. This will help prevent small chores from building up and stressing you out, like unloading the dishwasher, matching up your socks, and sorting the mail.
